Study to be Civil Construction Designer

Australia is well known for high standards and strict regulation in the building industry.  Thus, an Australian civil construction design qualification is highly respected globally.  Due to fast-paced urbanisation, recovery from natural disasters, and economic growth, this skill set is in high demand. Often called civil design, civil construction design managers the designing construction and ongoing maintenance of the naturally and physically built environment. This includes bridges, tunnels, dams, airports, pipelines, and even parts of building and railway systems. Phases of the work include feasibility studies,  investigating sites,  creating concepts,  building the design,  modelling,  and simulations.

The jobs of
Civil Engineering Draftsperson & Civil Engineering Technician are currently listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) (as of Sept 22, 2023), and may make graduates eligible for the Temporary Graduate Visa.


Depending on your skills and experience, you can expect to earn an average of $100,500/year according to industry research

Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction Design

most international students will study the Advanced Diploma of Civil Construction design for 2 years,  hopefully then qualify for the Graduate Work Stream of the Temporary Graduate Visa.

Tuition averages $20,000-$24,000, paid in instalments every 3 months.

In the course you will learn topics including:

  1. managing teams

  2. managing project time

  3. using Computer Aided Design (CAD) to create 3D models

  4. producing basic engineering drawings

  5. preparing detailed designs of foundations, subdivisions,  open roads,  surface drainage,  civil concrete structures,  civil steel structures,  civil timber structures

  6. managing risk on projects

  7. applying technical mathematics

  8. reading and interpreting plans and specifications

  9. project procurement

To be eligible for the course, international students must:

  • the 18 years of age or older

  • have completed the equivalent of Australian year 12

  • have a minimum English level of IELTS 5.5 (or another accepted test)
