Choosing the Right Early Childhood Course

There are several study pathways in Early Childhood Education while on a student visa:

  • Certificate III (1 year) – entry-level qualification, suitable for students who want to start working sooner

  • Diploma (1 year) – builds on Certificate III and allows for more responsibility and career progression

  • Bachelor degree (4 years / 2.5 years if you hold a Diploma) – required for students who want to become qualified early childhood teachers

For students who already hold a bachelor in any field:

  • Graduate Diploma (1 year) – a shorter pathway into teaching for degree holders

  • Masters degree ( 2 years / 1 year if you hold a Graduate Diploma) - advanced qualification for leadership or specialised roles

👉 Many international students begin with Certificate III and continue to the Diploma as part of a longer-term pathway.

The childcare sector in Australia continues to see demand for qualified educators, particularly in early learning settings.

It really comes down to your goals and education level:

  • Want to start working quickly?
    → Certificate III or Diploma

  • Want better pay and more opportunities?
    → Bachelor

  • Already have a degree and want to switch careers or improve your options?
    → Graduate Diploma or Masters

So… which level should I choose?

What Early Childhood Education Qualifications Can I Study on a Student Visa?

Good news! We consider these international student qualifications to be quite safe from the threat of Artificial Intelligence (AI) taking the job away. There is a small chance of teachers being limited or replaced in any near future. Learn about AI-safe courses.

Choosing the right qualification is key to your career success in childcare. Here’s how each course compares:

Certificate III in Early Childhood Education & Care (Entry-Level)

The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education & Care is the standard entry-level qualification required to work in childcare settings in Australia.

This entry-level course is ideal for international students who want to gain practical skills and begin working in as little as 12 months.

Why this course matters:

  • want to start working quickly

  • have no previous childcare experience

  • plan to progress to a Diploma later

Course Overview

  • Duration: Approximately 12 months

  • Includes: Practical placement in childcare centres

  • Study level: Entry-level (VET qualification)

Career Outcomes & Salary

After completing this course, you can work as:

  • Long Day Care Worker

  • Family Day Care Worker

  • Occasional Care Worker

  • Qualified Nanny

  • Early Childhood Worker

  • Playground Supervisor

💰 Average hourly wage: $25–$32/hour (based on award wages in Australia)

👉 This is one of the quickest ways to start earning while gaining local work experience.

Course Fees

  • Estimated tuition (2026): $8,000 – $12,000

  • Payment options: Instalments available depending on the college

Career Progression & Migration Pathway

  • On its own, the Certificate III offers limited long-term progression in your career (and if skilled migration may be a goal), which is why many students choose to continue to the Diploma.

  • Most students continue to the Diploma for better job opportunities

A common pathway for international students is: Certificate III → Diploma → stronger career & migration outcomes

The Diploma is generally more favourable than Certificate III when considering long-term career and migration outcomes, although requirements can vary and may change over time.

Students should always seek up-to-date advice based on their individual circumstances.

IMPORTANT:  Regardess of the qualification you study, ensure it is is recognised by the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), as an approved early childhood qualification for Early Childhood Teachers.

Career Outcomes for Early Childhood Education Teachers in Australia

So… what happens after you finish your childcare course?

This is usually the big question—and honestly, it’s the right one to be asking.

The good news is that early childhood education is one of those fields in Australia where there’s consistent demand, and once you’re qualified, there are real job opportunities.

What kind of jobs can you get?

Your job options will depend on the qualification you complete:

With a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

This is your entry point into the industry. You’ll typically work in support roles like: * Long Day Care Worker * Family Day Care Worker * Occasional Care Worker * Qualified Nanny / Au Pair * Early Childhood Worker * Playground Supervisor

Certificate III

With a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care

This gives you more responsibility & independence with the children. You can work as: * Early Childhood Educator * Family Day Care Educator * Occasional Care Educator * Centre Director * Educational Leader * Room Leader * Nominated Supervisor * Second in Charge/ Certified Supervisor

With a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education

This is where your teaching career gets a big step up. These roles come with more responsibility, better pay, and stronger long-term career options: * Early Childhood Teacher (ECT) * With specific qualifications: Primary School Teacher (Prep-Year 3) * Educational Leader/Director * Early Intervention Specialist * Family Day Care Coordinator * Centre Director

With a Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Education

This is usually for students who already have a degree in any discipline and want to move into teaching. It can lead to work as: * Early Childhood Teacher (ECT) * With specific qualifications: Primary School Teacher (Prep-Year 3) * Educational Leader/Director * Early Intervention Specialist * Family Day Care Coordinator * Policy Advisor/Consultant * Centre Director

With a Master of Early Childhood Education

This is the highest qualification in this PR pathway. It can lead to work as: * Early Childhood Teacher (ECT) * With specific qualifications: Primary School Teacher (Prep-Year 3) * Educational Leader/Director * Early Intervention Specialist * Family Day Care Director * Policy Advisor/Consultant * Early Childhood Researcher or Lecturer * Centre Director

Masters

Is there demand for these roles?

Yes—and it’s one of the biggest advantages of this field. Australia has a critical shortage of Early Childhood Educators, creating strong job opportunities for qualified graduates.

  • Over 5,000+ active job listings nationwide, with consistent demand in cities like Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, according to Jobs and Skills Australia

  • Projected 21.6% job growth over the next five years, according to SEEK

  • Around 35% of Australia is classified as a “childcare desert”, meaning limited access to services, with over 1.1 million Australians lacking adequate childcare availability, based on data from the Australian Education Union

This ongoing shortage means qualified early childhood educators are needed —particularly in regional areas, where demand is even stronger.

Higher-level qualifications (like Bachelor and above) are especially valuable, and can make it easier to find work after you graduate.

As of April 2026, SEEK has 6,312 jobs advertised for early childhood workers, of that 4,996 are for ECE Teachers.

As we say in Australia, it’s time to get a wriggle on (hurry up!) — start your journey towards a qualification in this high-demand industry.

Early Childhood Teacher Salary

How much can I earn?

Let’s talk dollars (because this matters).

According to the Aussie Childcare Network:

  • Starting out (Certificate III): $28–$30/hour OR $48,000-$60,000/year (based on award wages in Australia)

  • With a Diploma: $28–$35/hour OR $60,000–$77,000/year (based on award wages in Australia, and experience)

  • Bachelor (Teacher level): $65,000-$90,000 depending on experience level, up to $115,000/year for a Centre Manager/Director

  • Graduate Diploma / Masters: $70,000-$95,000 depending on experience level, up to $115,000/year for a Centre Manager/Director - very strong long-term earning potential if moving into senior management or policy roles

$$$ In simple terms: the higher your qualification, the more you can earn, and the more options you’ll have.

Can this help me stay in Australia?

This is something a lot of international students think about—and it makes sense.

Some roles in early childhood education, particularly at the teacher level, may be listed on the Skilled Occupation List - depending on your qualifications and experience.

That can help with:

  • Gaining local work experience

  • Exploring visa options after study, such as the 485 Graduate Visa

  • Building a longer-term pathway in Australia - such as getting sponsored or being invited for skilled migration

In the end, it really comes down to your situation. It’s always recommended to get up-to-date migration advice from a professional—but picking the right qualification that suits your background may be the first step.

Why are there so many job opportunities for teaching graduates?

In April 2026, Seek had 4,591 early childhood jobs advertised. Surprisingly, jobs growth over the next 5 years sits at 21.6%. There’s ongoing demand across Australia, which means many students are able to find work after completing their course—especially at the Diploma and Bachelor level.

There is a shortage of around 21,000 Early Childhood Teachers (ECTs) in Australia (identified by Jobs and Skills Australia).

There are several issues affecting both supply of qualified teachers and growing demand for early childhood education.  Reasons for so many job openings include:
