Future-Proof Your Qualification & Career
Do not let Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Take Your Career
A qualification from Australia carries global recognition and high value. Employers often view international student graduates as courageous, adaptable, and hardworking, no matter the industry.
While deciding to study in Australia may feel exciting, the real challenge today is choosing the right course. Unlike previous generations—where getting a degree and entering the workforce was straightforward—modern students must carefully evaluate the future relevance of their studies.
Ask yourself these critical questions:
-
Will this qualification still be in demand in 5, or even 10 years?
-
Could automation or emerging technology make this job redundant (no longer needed)?
The truth is, some industries are already being disrupted. Jobs in data entry, online customer service, and call centres are increasingly being automated, highlighting the importance of future-proofing your career when choosing a degree in Australia.
"The professions & jobs that are most replacement-prone are those that are routine, screen-based & text/number heavy”
Industries at Risk of Automation & Job Loss
The biggest threat to workers is in industries where jobs easily overlap with AI tools and automation.
Cloud technology and software solutions are making it much easier for businesses —especially small ones — to operate more efficiently while reducing the need for human labour.
Some examples of technology replacing traditional roles include:
-
Xero – automating accounting tasks, reducing demand for bookkeepers and accountants
-
Canva – simplifying marketing content creation, impacting graphic designers
-
Wix – enabling anyone to build websites, decreasing the need for website developers
-
Amazon – handling online sales and logistics, replacing roles traditionally done by retail staff
Although human workers are still essential for overall business operations, employee numbers in many industries are declining rapidly. This makes it critical for international students to choose future-proof careers and qualifications that are more difficult for AI to replace.
Qualifications Safest from AI Disruption
What area of study should I consider?
Think of jobs where automation is not practical. Jobs with human empathy (ie. listening and providing feedback), unpredictable tasks and outcomes (ie. jobs where you have to 'think on your feet'), and specific physical skills (ie. laying tiles on a floor). The most obvious include:
-
trade workers (plumbers, carpenters, etc) – physically building, repairing (related qualifications)
-
healthcare professionals - looking after patients in a bed, administering medicine, rehabilitation exercises (related qualifications)
-
early childhood teachers – keeping 20 little people learning and safe (related qualifications)
-
counselling & mental health professionals –this is a growing industry due to the nature of AI and effects on society
-
police/security officers – out amongst the community
-
hospitality workers – face-to-face service and support (related qualifications)
-
aged care and disability – the jobs are heavily based on human interaction (related qualifications)
While ‘hands on’ jobs such as above may be “AI-safe”, there are future-proofed roles in every industry. For example:
-
top-level managers - driving the direction and management of companies (related qualifications)
-
specialised IT workers – experts in AI, gaming, networking, etc - delivering the creativity and problem solving needed for new products and solutions (related qualifications)
-
engineering & civil constrction - building the infastructure for AI (related qualifications)
It is not likely AI will replace the above jobs any time soon. However, expect that AI tools will be incorporated into the roles, hopefully making the job more efficient.
Decide What to Study in Australia for a Future-Proof Career
Be smart. Do your homework before you make the life-changing decision on the course your choose when becoming an international student.
Consider such things when considering the industry and the qualification:
-
What are the current and up-coming trends in the industry? Is this industry’s workforce vulnerable to major AI and automation changes?
-
How many job roles are currently open in that industry? Research on recruitment sites like seek.com.au and LinkedIn – this is a very good indication the current situation.
-
Is this industry/job "human-heavy"? Meaning much of the day-to-day tasks cannot be done by computers/automation.
This is a tricky one. One would imagine a factory would be human-heavy, but many are becoming ‘dark factories’, meaning the floor is fully automated and there are no humans there. Amazon is a leader in this movement.
Don't forget your SOFT SKILLS!
An Australian qualification will enhance your future career. However, do not forget to build your soft skills. Soft skills are human traits and abilities focused on behavioural and emotional intelligence. These include:
-
communication skills
-
problem solving
-
critical thinking
-
time management
-
negotiation skills
-
leadership skills
-
flexibility
